iMovie has many hidden features making it not seem advanced to a professional editor as myself.
Image 1. Window
Image 2. Menu
Image 3. Precision Editing
Other editors that I use have options in windows right alongside the timelines. I don’t need to open and close menus in order to change a process during production. Example; Open the audio editor to bump the audio, close the window to listen to test.
I do think the options in the software hidden in the windows do make iMovie greater than the other alternatives. For example more graphical control with sliding video edits, transitions, altering color, bumping audio. I would have never guessed to look for the word “precision editing”. The other software all have consistent terminology. iMovie seems to have it’s own vocabulary. I can definitely get used to it in order to benefit using it for its benefits.
I like that the options window shows simply by double clicking on the item you want adjusted. This helps so memorization of each menu option is not needed as long as you remember what is available.
Knowing there is such a thing as Advanced Mode helps. I searched for hours to use featured that I expected to be there, but were not. That is the first preference I changed after watching the training.
After I use iMovie more, I’m sure I will get used to the three different types of options and where they are all located. It’s very difficult to change from one software to the next. I think I just might become a trader.
