iMovie pros and cons

As a very advanced Final Cut Pro, Avid, Media 100 user, I always looked at iMovie as “less than able” software. After this training I consider some of the iMovie advanced features superb to the software I use daily. My 2 prior posts explain the features I am most impressed with. A few others are the options to export to Final Cut Pro, MobileMe, Youtube with automatic transcoding, compression and uploading.

The features I do not like are that when translating to Final Cut Pro most of the elements I favor would be lost such as transitions being defaulted back to a simple cross-dissolve. Luckily they are not lost when burning directly to iDVD.

I also would prefer not to have so many menus and hidden advanced features. At least most of them are available by simply double clicking. Some of the menus had to be closed in order to proof the changes and then reopen to make additional adjustments.

Learning using Lynda.com

Compared to driving to a course (Final Cut Pro), Lynda.com saved time and money, the subject was taught straight to the point, no unwanted interruptions from other students, chaptered by subjects, organized well by subjects beginning to advanced. I enjoyed the style.

I do wish there was a test to judge our general to advanced knowledge prior to trainings allowing the training to begin at our level instead of from the very basics just as an adult class usually begins with a survey.
